Guardian Readalong: Vol. 2, Chapters 1 & 2

Guardian novel readalong

We're on to the second volume of the official translation, and the Merit Brush arc! Whether you've been with us since the start, or are just joining in, welcome aboard!

Here are last week's chapters, aka the end of vol. 1/the Mountain-River Awl arc. You can find all previous discussions on the schedule post (vol. 1 part 1, vol. 1 part 2), or via the !readalong tag.

This week's chapters:
  • Chapter 1: Guo Changcheng has an uncanny encounter; Sangzan is struggling with learning Mandarin; and Zhao Yunlan steals his team's food. Also, no one has any work ethic at the SID!
  • Chapter 2: Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng investigate; Shen Wei visits his bedroom and thinks about Zhao Yunlan; the Emissary visits the Netherworld, where the Magistrate is scheming.

The corresponding chapters in the Chinese version on JJWXC/the fan translation are 46 and 47.

Excerpts:

1) Food thief Zhao Yunlan

“Hey, is there food?” Zhao Yunlan came dashing through the criminal investigation unit’s door. Catching sight of Chu Shuzhi, Zhao Yunlan gave him a quick pat-down without another word. When his search turned up a hard-boiled egg in Chu Shuzhi’s coat pocket, he unceremoniously claimed it for himself.

Chu Shuzhi was outraged, but as Zhao Yunlan’s subordinate, he didn’t have the guts to protest.

Next, Zhao Yunlan grabbed a carton of milk from the fridge, ripped it open, and guzzled it down.

“That’s mine!” Daqing yowled. “You’re even stealing cat food?! Have you no shame?!”

Zhu Hong asked, “Why don’t you go to the cafeteria?”

“I’m in a hurry.” Mouth full of milk and egg, Zhao Yunlan strode off purposefully…straight into a wall.

2) SID work ethics

Zhu Hong hung up and said, “In keeping with our department’s tradition of doing nothing all day and then racking up overtime at night, it’s five minutes past time to clock out and our fucking boss has just dumped a pile of work in our lap.”

Hearing that, Lin Jing bolted out the door before anyone else could react. As he vanished into the night, he cried, “Not listening, not listening! I’m not listening!”

Zhu Hong stuck the note with the address to the wall, wrapped her scarf over her face, and followed right behind him. “I’m a cold-blooded animal; I’m afraid of the cold! Goodbye!”

Daqing slipped out as the door shut. “My winter coat hasn’t even come in yet!”

And just like that, the only ones left in the office were Chu Shuzhi, who hadn’t had time to react, and the fool Guo Changcheng.

“Fuck,” said Chu Shuzhi.

3) Shen Wei's bedroom

The door to Shen Wei’s bedroom was always closed. He pushed it open, and the lights inside turned on automatically, revealing a room devoid of furnishings. Instead, there were portraits on the wall, with framing and mounting that betrayed their great age.

The paintings were all of the same man: his front, his profile, his back. His clothes changed with the times, but the man himself was always the same, down to the subtlest expression of his brows. Life after life after life, never changing.

Old paintings gave way to an array of photographs of all sizes. Here the man was still a child; there he had grown up. There were photos of him laughing and photos where his brows were drawn in concern, photos of him fooling around or engaged in conversation. There was even one immortalizing a moment when a cat had jumped onto his head.

Each and every one was of Zhao Yunlan.

4) Netherworld shenanigans

The Emissary cut him off with an icy glance. “I’ve come to tell you something. Whether or not you believe me, I am the protector of the Great Seal. I won’t miss a single one of the Four Hallowed Artifacts. I will carry out my duty. And if I ever wished to break my vow, nothing could stop me—not even if you reawakened Kunlun-jun or restored the primordial gods to life. Stop your dirty tricks. You do not want to anger me.”

The Magistrate bowed his head very low. “I fear my lord may have misunderstood. Connecting the Book of Merits to the Book of Life and Death was the Guardian’s idea. That’s why we rushed to make it and give it to him. We never imagined it could betray my lord’s identity. We greatly regret not considering things more fully…”

There was a trace of a sneer in the Emissary’s voice. “For your sake, I hope that’s true. Mind your actions. I’ll take my leave.”

On his final words, the Emissary was already disappearing into a cloud of black mist. Eventually the air of cold and wrath that accompanied him dissipated, and the reapers could finally let out a breath of relief. The Magistrate wiped sweat from his brow with a sleeve.

“My lord,” whispered a reaper, stepping forward. “The Emissary has a point. The Four Hallowed Artifacts are divided between him and the Chaos King of the Gui, and he is the protector of the Great Seal. Even if Kunlun-jun did awaken, he’s just a mortal now. What could he do? I say we might as well relax and have faith in the Emissary.”

“If the Great Seal were to break, do you know what kind of price would be required of its protector?” the Magistrate asked quietly. “All the primordial gods had to sacrifice themselves, never mind him, a demigod. It took hundreds of tribulations and lifetimes for him to cultivate a physical form for himself from the vicious darkness. Do you really think he could throw away tens of thousands of years of effort and sacrifice himself for the Great Seal?”

Questions:

How do you like the cover art for the second volume? (Larger version on Twitter.) What do you think about Chu Shuzhi's bedside manner? or the way Lin Jing, Zhu Hong and Daqing immediately dodge out of having to work a case? Shen Wei's thoughts about Zhao Yunlan's impending death? What about what's going on in the Netherworld, and the foreshadowing there? What about parallels with the drama?

(As usual, these are just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like!)

Our schedule (which is also where you can sign up to host a post - please do if you can!)

but I have to say I prefer the one for the first volume, because of the way Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan are both looking intently at each other in that one.

Me too. I prefer both the dynamic and the vibe.

Guo Changcheng almost runs over a ghost, and the drama decided to use a bit of this for the Regent's appearance in Haixing, didn't they?

Yes! I noted that too. *sends flowers to the drama writers*

Also, I don't know why I find the idea of Xiao-Guo driving so weird - the drama version can drive, too, after all! (He's in the driver's seat during a stake-out in episode 5.)

Hmm, does that necessarily mean he can drive? *goes to check* Oh, they're in ZYL's car -- do you really think he'd let GCC drive it? Maybe he left them there, and Changcheng got into the driver's seat to share snacks with Zhu Hong or something.

I feel like Changcheng might have a license because he comes from a fairly privileged background, but I wouldn't be surprised if the drama version never ever drives. In drama!Dragon City, I feel like there isn't a default of "everyone drives"/"everyone gets around by car". There are so many bikes around, and most of the people we see driving are government officials and taxi drivers/delivery people. IIRC, even the courier who delivers stuff to the SID is on a scooter, rather than in a van... idk.

You know, if I were working at a place like the SID, and I encountered random weird ghostly shenanigans like that, I'd tell someone at work.

Haha, right? I suppose Guo Changcheng has so little self-confidence that he thinks he was probably mistaken.

Zhao Yunlan stealing food off everyone! Lao-Chu cleaning up the bad luck Guo Changcheng picked up! The invisible library door, and Chu Shuzhi being banned from it! Lots of team and character stuff here. Fun!

I loved that whole sequence! And yeah, didn't much like Sangzan being the butt of jokes and impatience because he speaks a "foreign" language. (Does the Chinese actually say "foreign language"?)

No one wants to work overtime, LOL.

It's in line with them talking about loafing around in the drama, too. <3

Empathy: not something this Chu Shuzhi possesses, apparently! And drama!Guo Changcheng would have protested, at least.

I knooow! (I think Changcheng is too intimidated to protest. Drama!Changcheng's morals override his nerves quite often.)

OMG, Shen Wei! Such a stalker. Boundaries are for other people! (Which is something he and Zhao Yunlan agree on, at least. *g*)

I feel like slipping into his home at night is beyond what even ZYL would do! But ZYL crosses the line is other ways, so I guess it all evens out...

I see we're not even pretending there's a mystery here. *g*

I think that conversation with Daqing at the end of vol 1 made it pretty clear for anyone who hadn't already realised?

"Last time we sent the Guardian the Book of Life and Death, that was truly a mistake on our part. It almost revealed your identity, and we are incredibly sorry, Your Honour."

So fascinating how this all got adapted in the drama!! The book, and ZYL making an inquiry of the archives, and Shen Wei's secret being revealed (but the reveal being intercepted)...

So interesting to see how helpless the "Judge" feels, too, with "ten big deities above him" and Shen Wei getting all in his face. Having the drama!Dijun be in thrall to the throne gives the Regent a lot more power/agency and consequently makes him more culpable for everything that happens.

Thanks for the fan translation passage!

"Haha, right? I suppose Guo Changcheng has so little self-confidence that he thinks he was probably mistaken."

Oh, another possible reason, yep!

"It's in line with them talking about loafing around in the drama, too. <3"

Hee yes, I adore that scene. :D

"I feel like slipping into his home at night is beyond what even ZYL would do! But ZYL crosses the line is other ways, so I guess it all evens out..."

If he could just appear and disappear (without, like, breaking and entering), he would 10000% do that imo, lol. (Also, well, stuff happens later that says that he would still do that with breaking and entering. xD)

"Guo Changcheng almost runs over a ghost, and the drama decided to use a bit of this for the Regent's appearance in Haixing, didn't they? OMG. That is amazing. :D"

I did NOT make this connection, hahah, I love this! :D :D

"You know, if I were working at a place like the SID, and I encountered random weird ghostly shenanigans like that, I'd tell someone at work. Xiao-Guo, meanwhile, just goes home and then goes to work the next day without saying a word. Does anyone have any thoughts on what's going on in his head?!"

I was thinking that too, but I guess fear + 'this might as well happen'? Like, these things happen to him all the time now, time to get used to it and not bother people about it?

"For one, I don't much like that he's is just here now and we're told he's reformed, and that's that."

I really thought his story in the novel would be different than in the drama because of how scary he was before. I don't mind that's it's the same, but it's only been two weeks and I'm a bit confused that everyone just immediately trusts him, like, I'd need some more evidence that definitely no one is getting murdered by a vengeful ghost anymore? That said, HE'S ADORABLE, and I do wish he got more sympathy! *nods*

"I have no idea what's up with the "wheat", what that's supposed to be a mispronunciation for."

It says "receipt" later (I'm pretty sure I didn't figure it out myself the first time around, lol), and it's cool to have the confirmation that it makes sense in the original, thanks. :D

"Boundaries are for other people! (Which is something he and Zhao Yunlan agree on, at least. *g*)"

Ahahah, yes, they're very clearly both good with that. :D

"Fun with half-truths! This is what Zhao Yunlan says in chapter 15: "In fact, I've suggested it to the Netherworld many times. (...) But nothing ever came of it, so I thought the materials might be hard to find or that the Lords might have some other plans.""

Oooh, thanks for the direct quote, I was like 'the Magistrate is full of shit, I just don't remember exactly how'. xD

"Shen Wei laughs softly, marked with unspeakable ridicule. He doesn't say anything... he really has nothing decent to say."

"The old Judge really doesn't want to try how fast Soul Slayer's blade is."

I like these lines from the cut scene. Thanks for always sharing them! ♡ And I'm not even trying to comprehend all the implications of the differences here, lol, but it all ends up in the same place anyway, so I guess I don't have to. xD

Oh, yes, good point. I can easily see him deciding not to bother people about it. Talking to people is much scarier than dealing with ghosts, after all. *pets him*

And the other thing is that the narrative seems to have no sympathy for Sangzan's position as a speaker of an extinct language.

That’s something I’ve noticed in both Zhen Hun and Huai Dao – non-native speakers of Mandarin get no sympathy, only ridicule. I wonder if that’s a common attitude in China? :(

Great selection of quotes, as always! I love the SID shenanigans, and Shen Wei's Kunlun shrine especially.

What do you think about Chu Shuzhi's bedside manner?

/o\ He's so completely heartless, it's no wonder he thinks GCC is an idiot, given how much energy GCC puts into helping people. ;-p

The image of GCC "navigat[ing] the wet, slippery road as if his car were a large turtle" is more and more perfect the more I think about it. The clumsy awkward way turtles are on land translates so well to cars on icy roads. \o/

The incensed bystander was still raging. “Why are you bothering with him? Why didn’t you just run him over?!”

Wow, this gives me such a negative impression of social norms. Even if he's especially road-ragey, to think it's okay to say that, and to a complete stranger!! /o\

Chu Shuzhi’s jianbing-scented hands seemed to grab something from Guo Changcheng’s shoulders, then spun him around. After briskly swatting at Guo Changcheng’s back and both sides of his waist, Chu Shuzhi took out a napkin and wiped his hands before giving Guo Changcheng a shove. “You had bad luck all over you. I cleaned you up, so you can go now.”

I love how businesslike CSZ is about this. And it's probably largely professional, but I still like that he cleans Xiao Guo up. Aww! <3 <3 <3

I love ZYL leaving "so quickly that a wind seemed to rise in his wake." Dramatic, and also foreshadowy. <3

Like Trobadora, I didn't like the stuff about Sangzan's language difficulties. I much prefer the drama's approach, and Wang Zheng being kind and smitten.

And just like that, the only ones left in the office were Chu Shuzhi, who hadn’t had time to react, and the fool Guo Changcheng.
“Fuck,” said Chu Shuzhi.

Hee! :D :D :D

LOL at Zhao Yunlan not even bothering to write his own name. It's sad, too, though -- love letters would make Shen Wei so happy angsty but glad.

In the time since they’d returned from the snowy mountain, Zhao Yunlan hadn’t pestered him even once.

Oh no, ZYL is ghosting him! (That's got to sting.)

It was just as well, Shen Wei told himself. At most, a mortal might live a few dozen years—barely the blink of an eye. When death arrived, a human life would be extinguished like a candle, and this life would be no exception. In dying, Zhao Yunlan would once again forget him and this awkward interlude.

Ha, I really like this immortal perception of time. Like, eh, it's only going to be a few decades, that's nothing. :D

He pushed it open, and the lights inside turned on automatically

LOL! Does he have motion sensors in his Kunlun gallery? Or is this Shen Wei's powers? (I only noticed this when reading the quotes in the post.)

It wasn’t as if he should ever have existed in the first place.

Oof! :-(

Shen Wei had done everything imaginable to protect this one person—the one person he could never touch. And yet those people dared…

"Those people" is the people in the Netherworld, right? Not the people ZYL is drinking with?

The Emissary scolding the Magistrate in the Netherworld, vs the drama!Envoy yelling at the Regent in ZYL's office... They're very different, but both demonstrate Shen Wei's status relative to the Magistrate/Regent, and how well-controlled he and his temper usually are.

And if I ever wished to break my vow, nothing could stop me—not even if you reawakened Kunlun-jun or restored the primordial gods to life. Stop your dirty tricks. You do not want to anger me.”

Wait, how did Shen Wei know about this? What did I miss?

Voice still low, the Magistrate continued, “It’s best for the doer to undo his own handiwork. It was Kunlun-jun who appointed the Soul-Executing Emissary as the Great Seal’s protector. At this point, our only choice is to reawaken him.”

This plot point doesn't apply to the drama, of course, but there are still traces in the Regent approaching ZYL for help finding the Dijun's Register, and in the Regent and Deacon's distrust of Shen Wei...

"I love how businesslike CSZ is about this. And it's probably largely professional, but I still like that he cleans Xiao Guo up. Aww! <3 <3 <3"

It is so cute, like, he's all IDGAF, but he clearly gives a fuck because he wouldn't have done it otherwise. :D

"I love ZYL leaving "so quickly that a wind seemed to rise in his wake." Dramatic, and also foreshadowy. <3"

Ooooh, yep! ♡

"LOL at Zhao Yunlan not even bothering to write his own name. It's sad, too, though -- love letters would make Shen Wei so happy angsty but glad."

LOL AWWW. I can't see ZYL writing love letters even if he liked to write more, lol, but maybe on some special occasion, if he tries very hard?? :D I want to see that, lol.

""Those people" is the people in the Netherworld, right? Not the people ZYL is drinking with?"

Oh yep, definitely.

"This plot point doesn't apply to the drama, of course, but there are still traces in the Regent approaching ZYL for help finding the Dijun's Register, and in the Regent and Deacon's distrust of Shen Wei..."

I LOVE how this adaptation was done, with these kinds of things always appearing in a different context. Like, in these chapters too - THE FRUIT! When I got the connection I was so impressed with what they took and what they did with it. :D I don't think I've seen an adaptation done this way before. Usually it's either 'it's 95% faithful' or 'it's completely different (from the beginning or after some fork-in-the-road moment) and only keeps the characters' names'.

Yesss! (Whether he gives a fuck about CC or about the cleanliness of his own environment or about the cleanliness of the SID as an institution, I can't tell. But it's a big contrast with his lack of concern for the guy in the hospital.)

I can't see ZYL writing love letters even if he liked to write more, lol

Ha, no. The closest he'd come is sexting. But this mismatch makes me a little sad.

THE FRUIT! When I got the connection I was so impressed with what they took and what they did with it. :D

Ohhhh! That got turned into Wang Xiangyang's fruit stall, didn't it?! That totally slipped right by me. (And now I realise I should have included WXY in the yeeting poll, but I completely forgot he existed, lol.)

The adaptation has all the love, care and attention of the best kind of fanwork! :D :D :D

I lovelovelove the cover - give me soft Weilan and I'm good. :D ♡♡♡ I'm not 100% sure if Shen Wei is actually meant to be crying or if it's just a light effect, but either way this is softest damn thing and I'm in love. ♡

ZYL THE FOOD-STEALING CAT, ILY. Well, okay, everyone at SID steals food and no one even bats an eye. :D "Despite having just finished his jianbing, Chu Shuzhi didn’t feel quite full without an egg to follow it. He quickly snagged a piece of the beef pancake out of Zhu Hong’s hands."

Also this, lol, ZYL again, but I just love the vibe of everyone helping themselves to everything. :D "He tossed the eggshell and milk carton into Guo Changcheng’s garbage can, then grabbed a tissue from Zhu Hong’s desk."

I'm a big fan of the invisible door, such a fun concept. :D

Eh, "it’s five minutes past time to clock out and our fucking boss has just dumped a pile of work in our lap" is a pretty damn good reason to say 'fuck that', whether they actually did any work before or not. xD I love how everyone noping out leads to Chu Shuzhi and GCC having to work together. :D

"There was even one immortalizing a moment when a cat had jumped onto his head."

One of my favorite random details, hee, and I'd love to know what exactly was the situation there. :D (Also the cat is not Da Qing? Unless it's this Zhao Yunlan, because otherwise they never met when photographs were a thing?)

"His dumpy little car was packed with all kinds of books—textbooks, exercise books, and children’s literature, to name a few."

I found this so relatable, lol. (I didn't drive the car, but I was in a tiny car picking up about 200? 300? books for a charity auction. :D And another time there was a whole-ass tent in the same tiny car for the same reason. Oh, and a cake without a proper box. xD)

"Quickly taking the little baton Zhao Yunlan had given him out of his bag, he tucked it into his jacket’s inner chest pocket. He gave it a firm pat, as if it were a source of courage, and inched his car back onto the road."

"Red-faced from all the swatting, Guo Changcheng darted off, running with tiny steps."

"Startled, Guo Changcheng stood on tiptoe to peek from behind Chu Shuzhi."

Xiao Guo is the absolute cutest, and his body language in the drama is ON POINT. :D :D

“May Buddha have mercy,” Lin Jing intoned. “Unwed Benefactor, be free of envy, jealousy, and hatred.”

Lin Jing is such an ass and I love him, lol.

"Shen Wei’s phone still held every text Zhao Yunlan had ever sent him. He couldn’t bear to delete a single one."

*MELTS*

All of Shen Wei's thoughts about himself are just out to break my heart in pieces, DAMN. "It wasn’t as if he should ever have existed in the first place." *WIBBLES*

I know these are probably addressed and discussed in other threads, but since I may not get to them all, here are my answers.

I like how Chu Shuzhi is portrayed - even being gruff and not nice, he is kind. I like how he turns around and gets the bad luck off Guo Changcheng even when he doesn't want to interact with him otherwise.

What do you think about Chu Shuzhi's bedside manner? I give him the benefit of the doubt since I don't know anything about how to solve the problem, so maybe he can't do anything else there. Not excusing his abruptness, but it also reflects well that the patient is grateful to him, so he seems to be figuring the problem out.

or the way Lin Jing, Zhu Hong and Daqing immediately dodge out of having to work a case?
I prefer how the show has them more clearly caring about the people and cases, as opposed to how here they only seem to care about leaving. However, as an employee, I can see how they are creating a healthy work/life balance, and I respect that! :D

What about what's going on in the Netherworld, and the foreshadowing there? What about parallels with the drama?
I may have just forgotten it, but on my first read with the other translation, I found all of these underworld scenes confusing, and this time I felt it was much clearer that the Magistrate is honestly worried about the seal, and not just jockeying for power.

I like how Chu Shuzhi is portrayed - even being gruff and not nice, he is kind.

Yes, agreed. He's a lot like his drama!counterpart at this point, I think. And that's a good point about whether or not he can solve the problem himself. Staying might not help at all.

I still find the underworld scenes a little confusing, lol. I think it's because I keep accidentally superimposing drama/Dixing politics when that doesn't fit at all. :-)
